 Rootball or Potted plants

What is the difference between rootball & potted plants?

A rootball is the bundle of roots and soil that holds a plant together. You’ll often see this with trees and shrubs that have been grown in the ground, then dug up and wrapped in burlap or wire to keep everything intact.

A potted plant is one that’s grown and sold in a container. The roots and soil stay inside the pot until you’re ready to plant it. When you take it out of the pot, the roots and soil you see together are the plant’s rootball.

How do I plant rootball hedging?

Planting rootball hedging plants is simple with a few easy steps:

  1. Dig a trench or holes wide enough for the rootballs and about the same depth as each rootball.

  2. Loosen the soil and mix in some compost to help roots grow.

  3. Place the plants in the trench so the top of each rootball is level with the ground. Our rootball hedging plants are wrapped in burlap, which you should leave on to plant.

  4. Fill the soil back in around the roots and gently firm it down.

  5. Water well after planting and keep the soil moist while the plants establish.

  6. Add mulch to keep in moisture and reduce weeds.

The best time to plant rootball hedging is in autumn or early spring, when the weather is cool and damp.

How do I care for my plants once they arrive?

We provide a full Planting & Care Advice guide with clear steps on how to prepare your site, plant correctly, and water based on your specific hedge type.
It’s important to follow these steps closely — especially in the first 12 months, when your plants are establishing.

How often should I water my hedge plants?

It depends on the plant type, soil type, and time of year.
As a general rule:

  • Spring/Summer: Everyday until established

  • Autumn/Winter: Only if just planted or during dry spells

  • Always water at the base, never the leaves

  • Never let roots dry out or sit in waterlogged soil

Using our recommended seep hose and nutrients included in our Guarantee Pack helps maintain the perfect balance.
See full watering schedule here.
